After tests today it has been concluded that 1.0.8 is now capable of being installed fresh and also being upgradable.
Using the upgrade.php, the following upgrades are possible
1.0.7 to 1.0.8
1.0.6 to 1.0.8
Although some more testing and code tidying is required, the release of 1.0.8 wont be far off. View Full Entry Category: Development Comments:0Tags:1.0.8
I have been looking forward to this new release of Ubuntu for a while, and finally its released although in a somewhat covert fashion.
The Ubuntu Homepage has not been updated, but a browse to their downloads section reveals a very promising link. Check for yourselves at http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/
The install has run fine and the resulting blog appears to work perfectly. The uprade.php has also been created to upgrade 1.0.7 to 1.0.8 but should also work with 1.0.6 to 1.0.8. The upgrade file will be tested later on today and the findings will be made available. View Full Entry Category: Development Comments:0Tags:1.0.8 Test
For the first time we here at Mi-Dia are acknowledging an Alpha stage to our development process. Normally, when it makes its way to being installable and compressed in a ZIP format, its already in the BETA stage where we open it up for BETA testing by the public.
The method will stay the same though as this Alpha version wont be released. It was soly seeing how well we could package this version up and we intend to basically add any changes directly to this archive before releasing.

These little guys have been a plague on the internet ever since the first forum based website long ago. Even though they are pure evil, they have become a common face and a reassurace that yes, you are on a website and not staring at your wallpaper.
Utilising the BBcode system, Smiley's have been introduced in 1.0.8 and have taken pride of place within the dev blog and are fully intened to be in the 1.0.8 release. So these little guys will be around for many more years to come.
They can be added to any posted content, including entries and comments, on all settings. Currently there are 8 Smiley's but more may be added in the future. View Full Entry Category: Development Comments:0Tags:Smiley 1.0.8
Some people think that blog's are not a place for an avatar, usually because blog's are person specific. With Mi-Dia Blog being designed for adaptation, it has long been possible to have 1 author, several authors and even your visitors as authors, even your cat if you dont mind a scratched keyboard.
To expand on the idea of multi user blogging, we want you to be able to see who wrote what without the need of looking for a name, hence why we brought in avatars.
The system behind avatars is pritty simple. The blog administrator can decide if he / she wants odd ball avatars on his / her blog by a simple option in the staff panel. When enabled the site show's of its fancy new side, including a very "elaborate" way to add your avatar.
It also show's the author's avatar on their entries
and if that was not enough for your little pixel's, the system also show's avatars in comments.
Plenty of Avatary Goodness.
Currently only .png format 50 x 50 images are supported, but this will be improved upon soon. We intend to have .gif .png and .jpg support with an admin definable size.
Firstly, the forums will be off-line until restored, these were inactive prior the issues and take up low priority on our list. The demo version is back on-line but wont be upgraded to 1.0.7 as progress is taking place on 1.0.8 and looks like a release is not too far off, because of this a 1.0.7 upgrade on the demo site is a waste of development time.
Secondly, members will no longer receive notification emails when new entries are posted, due to the function being too close to that of mass emailing which is not allowed on this host. To keep up to date with Mi-Dia we advise you to subscribe to our RSS feed for notification or just check the website. For the time being, ONLY the main site is online. Within the next few days we hope to have the full section of sites online and be able to continue with the development of 1.0.8. More news will be posted when available guys, so stay tuned. View Full Entry Category: News Comments:0Tags:Hosting Issue
Mi-Dia as it turns out, rather obviously, is not breaking any law's or Term's Of Service. But the backend lockout was caused by a hardware failure, as the following email from technical support points out.
"Hi there,
Your site(s) mentioned are hosted on a SAN volume that crashed. We are in the process of restoring this volume, however we are unable to accurately predict when it will cotraceroute
mplete due to restoring billions of small files.
No data has been lost.
As soon as the restore is completed, then your site will be online.
Regards "
Although the time predict section is rather messed up, it basically mean's that development can start again soon and this ordeal amounts to the world telling me to take a break. So while I sit here with a can of Cold Budweiser, I contemplate how many twitter's will read this. View Full Entry Category: News Comments:0Tags:Host
I have been working all day writing new code directly on the dev blog and made masses of progress. But when I logged back in to download all of my work, it turns out the host has suspended the hosting account for review. So even though the sites are still online, I have no access for the time being.
Hopefully this will be resolved in the next few hours. I will post a new message when it has been resloved. View Full Entry Category: News Comments:0Tags:Host Development
The system is now capable of handing .png images up to 100 pixels x 100 pixels. Although limited, it is the first step towards a more fun Blogging Experience.
In the Experiment, Avatars are Uploaded through the Existing Account's section and handled like normal code. These avatars are then displayed in comments and entries by a new avatar(); function.
The following plan's are being worked on for this feature.
- Multiple Image Type Support
- Admin Definable Max Dimentions
- Default Avatar where there is no avatar present
The 1.0.8 version of Mi-Dia blog was not planned to be started on untill half way through May 2010. But due to a little spare time I decided to Experiment with some of the Idea's.
Sadly, the experimentation hooked me a little two much and I ended up fully making the features. Which although free's time up for extended testing, it still reduces the work load for when I have planned it for. Oh well.
Here is a run down of some of the new features.
- User Online Status All Entry View section's now show the current status of the author, either online or offline.
- Disable Snippet Snippets can now be enabled and disabled at the favour of the webmaster with a simple option. Disabling snippets fully removes the snippet feature from the blog. With some clever functions making sure your not left with a blank rss.
-IP Lock When enabled, only one account can be registered to an IP, when not unlimited can.
-Show Pass You can enable your blog to show the new user's password on the website to them, along with sending the normal registration email. Great for if you dont require your users to authenticate their email.
- Guest Commenting Option to allow Guests to comment on your blog. If enabled Guests have additional fields "name" and "email" to fill out. The view.php also finds out if the account is a guest and replaces the standard username feature with a new username combind of the supplied name and ( Guest ).
Another few changes include
- Bug Fixes
- Removal of Advert Block
Listed in the header is a new tab "Dev Blog". This blog is our testing ground for live application of changes. By accessing this area of the site you can see the latest changes and read the development notepad.
Take note though, at times you might go on and it not work, or have loads of errors. This is purely because its a testing ground, dont get freightened okay.
Mi-Dia website is currently testing 2 new options which will be added to the 1.0.8 release. These options will be fully configurable by the respective blog administrator.
1) IP Lock
When this feature is enabled, it will only allow 1 account to register from each IP address. This was currently the default in versions 1.0.0 to 1.0.7 . We feel this feature would be important and is being tested on this website. We have set it to disabled allowing multiple accounts to register from 1 IP address. For example, you and your family can join having seperate accounts on the same computer.
2) Show Password
In versions 1.0.0 to 1.0.7, the registration system ONLY sent the password to your email address, so that you needed a valid email address to find your password. Some sites opperate less strictly and to make it easier we have added the option of the registration page showing your password on screen along side sending a confirmation email. The administrator can choose if the password is show on the page or not.
The two above features will amount to 2 seperate, and simple options in the settings page of the Staff Panel.
Here on Mi-Dia we are using the following options
- Allow unlimited accounts per IP
- Show password on page when registered
